Zachary Ying and the Dragon Emperor

Zachary Ying and the Dragon Emperor

This book solidified my love and adoration for Xiran Jay Zhao. I don't know if there is a "will read anything they write including if they issue a copy of the phone book" list, but I would certainly be on it.

Very Bad People

I fell into reading Thrillers (both adult and YA) as a palate cleanser between high fantasy and epic series. Very Bad People was precisely what I was in the mood for and was a quick, gripping read that left me wanting more - can we have a sequel, please?

The Keepers of Metsan Valo

Wendy Webb serves up another wonderful tale set among her lush Lake Superior universe. Picking up The Keepers of Metsan Valo was just what I needed to pop over a book slump and enjoy a well-designed yet effortless story about things that go bump in the night. Webb revisits a familiar storyline that has been quilted and embellished with Finnish folklore.

Blood of the Lost Kingdom

I am so happy to be back in Dorcha Wood. This book leapt over the dreaded second-book slump and instead delivered a perfectly paced story that draws us deeper into Ward's fantasy world. Fiadh and Gideon forge paths towards the mission they feel called to - protecting those they hold dear and the world they live in. Now, I will be the first to admit that I was fully team "I want to throttle the heck out of Gideon" when starting this book but now...I'm back down to wanting to maybe just gently bonk him on the nose.

Agnes at the End of the World

I loved Wilder Girls, have a slightly unhealthy obsession with the stories of the downfalls of religious cults, and well-documented love of women who save the world storylines, so where did Agnes at the End of the World go astray?

A Magic Steeped in Poison

With a plot unfurling like the steam off a freshly brewed cup of tea, A Magic Steeped in Poison is an instant must-read for fantasy lovers. Judy I. Lin creates a world filled with palace intrigue, a MAGICAL tea-brewing competition, and deftly woven in inspiration from Chinese history and mythology.

Iron Widow Review

I will be loudly and aggressively recommending Iron Widow until I get this book (and that ENDING) out of my system (which, I don't see happening this millennium). Xiran Jay Zhao has written a unique and fascinating world where the people of Huaxia, under siege from the Hunduns, send young men into battle in Chrysalises.

The Thirteenth Hour

Did I know what to expect from an adult gaslamp fantasy before reading The Thirteenth Hour? I fully did not. Is this a new genre I’m obsessed with now? Oh heck yes. I’m in full fangirl mode (and, know you will be too). Come with me into the world of the Chime, powered by steam and a healthy fear of cruel gods and those who enforce their wrath.

Misrule

The only thing that I didn't like about this book is the fact that I can only read it for the first time, once. The worst part about finally breaking a curse is when, surprise! a new one is right there to fill that space. Kind of like when you finally clear your inbox and then everyone starts replying all back.

Malice

This book was everything I wanted in a fantasy novel. I have had an (embarrassing) soft spot for Sleeping Beauty since I was a little kid, holding on to the plastic case for the Disney VHS and signing along with Once Upon a Dream more times than I can remember. There was something about the power of true love and how magnificent Maleficent is that kept that story with me and made me think I'd never find a retelling I'd cling to as tightly.
